Costs & Fundraising
Costs
Shotgun sports are very rewarding; boys and girls of all ages can compete on a very equal basis. Our athletes compete individually, as a three-person squad and overall as a team. However, clay shooting sports are not among the least expensive sports. Understanding this, each Shell Shocker family chooses the specific events they will participate in during the season–team members can participate in just team practices to every tournament event or some mix in between. All team members must, at minimum, pay the annual team registration which includes SCTP liability insurance to attend any practice or event. Beyond team registration, parents can select events in which to participate.
Shotgun Shells
Athletes are responsible for the cost of shotgun shells for all practices and tournament events. Each Tournament Event will require 100 shells plus warm-ups and Team Practices require 50 to 100 shells each depending on the game being practiced. The Shell Shockers qualify for Federal’s annual youth discount program which allows us to purchase shells directly from the factory on a team order at approximately $50 per flat (10 boxes of 25 Shells) for competition quality shells.
Shotguns
New team members do not need a shotgun before attending their first team practices or tournaments; however athletes will eventually need their own shotgun that is properly fitted to them. Please be sure to read our page on selecting a shotgun before you make a shotgun purchase for your child. Semi-automatic and Over-Under shotguns in 12 or 20 gauge are acceptable; and a semi-automatic is recommended for younger shooters, smaller frame shooters, and beginners for reduced recoil. Any brand is acceptable so long as the shotgun fits the shooter. When planning your gun budget, it would be much better to purchase a gun that saves some budget to pay for proper fitting, rather than buying a more expensive shotgun that also consumes your budget for gunfitting. We have seen kids shoot successfully with $250 guns while others have the luxury of more expensive high-end over-under guns—the cost of the gun does not break targets. Common requirements for all is that the shotgun must 1) be operationally safe 2) properly fit the shooter.
Team Groups
Shell Shocker Team Members select the Team Group level they want to participate based on experience, skill, time available, and competitive ability.

Fundraising Opportunities
To help offset the costs of participating in competitive sporting clays, the Shell Shockers conduct annual fundraisers. Each team family can choose whether or not to participate in fundraising–participation is not required. An athletes family may elect to self-pay in full and not participate in fundraisers during the season. While other families may leverage fundraising opportunities to help reduce the cost of participating as a Shell Shocker.
Our team has a long-term endowment account with Midway Foundation and we receive an annual draw of 5% on total funds to help fund team operations. We typically conduct one fundraising effort to increase our endowment by some amount each year. In addition to our annual endowment draw and funding, we also conduct a cash-generating fundraiser through a raffle of hunting packages with our team sponsor Clinton House Plantation. Funds generated by the annual raffle can generate cash immediately available to purchase targets, shells, gear, and pay tournament entry fees.
If cost is a concern and keeping your child from participating, please contact Coach Keith Smith to learn more about our fundraising, loaner shotguns, and team target program designed to help as many as possible participate in shooting sports as a Shell Shocker.
